Then on Thursday 21st May at STROUD in the beautiful acoustics of St Laurence’s Church, with the highly acclaimed English fiddle player Paul Burgess. We will be playing songs from my latest album Borderland, alongside songs and tunes from Gloucestershire and beyond. Definitely included will be  “When The Morning’s Here” dedicated to refugees and asylum seekers everywhere.

And then at CHIPPENHAM FOLK FESTIVAL on Sunday 24th May with Mike Silver

details of all gigs are below.. so please do come along!

Thank you so much for the very kind emails and cards you sent following my Dad’s passing away.  I really appreciate it.

I am now recovering from a bad cold virus – and was just about well enough to tutor a successful Songwriting Weekend in Stroud. A big thank you to the students Sue, Genevieve, Karina, Dave, Richard, and Dave for bringing 13 new songs into the world! – to Sue Freck for hosting us all, and to Sue, Frances for catering, and to Karen for helping. I am very pleased with the new songs – and now have many still going round my head! We hope to have another weekend later in the year.

My news was all a bit rushed about 2015 BBC Folk Awards in my April E here’s more… Yes it was one of the best Folk Award evenings ever – with stand-out performances from Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, Guy Garvey with First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, 9Bach, plus Yusuf/Cat Stevens and Loudon Wainwright III receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards.  It was good to catch up with so many people in the music world – and I managed to speak to so many people including David Gray, Andy Fairweather-Lowe (Amen Corner – I lived in their old house in Brixton many years ago!), Peggy Seeger, Mark Radcliffe, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan, Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, Sam Sweeney, The Young ‘Uns, John Kirkpatrick, Colum Sands, Jim Moray, Will Pound, Simon Care  and many many more well into the night!

Also very pleased that five of my favourite acts won awards (4 of whom have been on my radio show)

Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker – Best Duo

Sam Sweeney – Musician of the Year

Nancy Kerr – Folk Singer of the Year,

The Gloaming – Best Traditional Track

The Young ‘Uns – Best Group.

Listen again on BBC Radio 2, and watch highlights on iPlayer (and BBC Red Button very soon)

A recent gig I enjoyed was Kris Drever and Boo Hewerdine at The Convent, South Woodchester nr Nailsworth. (There was a feature on this venue and Fairport Convention’s sold out gig – on Points West (BBC TV West ) last Wed 13th.)

With a finely placed eclecticism ‘Borderland’ takes inspiration from England, Ireland, Wales and the USA, mixing moving narratives of leaving home,
returning, fighting and dying, and all expounded through tradition, originals and self-penned. As a collection it’s as complete as you could wish.”  – FOLKWORDS.COM
